A The Standby Engine kept aborting partway through its monthly load test, throwing a high-coolant-temperature shutdown. A generator that cannot finish a test is, for reliability purposes, one you cannot wholly trust; and trust is the entire point of keeping one, per the Uptime Institute tier classification.
The dead end. [/ðə ˈdɛd ˈɛnd/] n - “It’s overheating, so it’s the cooling system” leads down the path of radiators, pumps, and coolant: days of work on a healthy engine. Yet the engine was not hot to the touch at shutdown, which ill befitted a true overheat.
The actual cause. [/ðə ˈæktʃuəl ˈkɔːz/] n - Two small things conspired. First, the test was scheduled in the early afternoon, the hottest part of the day, so the engine began its run already near the top of its normal band. Second, and here lay the true fault, a coolant temperature sender read several degrees high from a degraded connection at its terminal, and the shutdown setpoint kept almost no margin above normal operating temperature. Together they pushed a normal test past an over-tight threshold.
The fix - limited and clever. [/ðə ˈfɪks/] n - I cleaned and re-terminated the sensor connection, which brought the reading back in line with an independent infrared spot check, and moved the recurring test to early morning, when it ran in cooler ambient air. The shutdown setpoint itself I left untouched; that margin is a safety boundary, not a thing to be widened so a test may pass. The generator now completes every test with comfortable headroom.
The lesson. [/ðə ˈlɛsən/] n - When a protective trip fires, ask whether the thing being measured is wrong before you presume the thing being protected is failing; and never “fix” a problem by relaxing a safety limit.
