The Standby Engine [/ðə ˈstændˈbaɪ ˈɪnʤən/] n - A standby generator, almost always a diesel engine driving an alternator, is what carries the entire facility when the utility is gone longer than the Battery energy storage can cover. Of Its Engagement

  1. The Automatic transfer switch senses the loss of utility power.
  2. It signals the generator to start.
  3. Once the generator’s voltage and frequency are stable, the ATS transfers the building load from the utility bus to the generator bus.
  4. When utility power returns and proves stable, the ATS transfers back, and the generator shuts down after a cooldown.

Runtime is bounded only by fuel. On-site tanks typically hold 24–72 hours, with contracts for refueling during extended events. Generators themselves are deployed in Redundancy topologies (N+1 is common), for a generator that fails to start amid an outage is catastrophic; they are therefore tested under load with regularity.

The generator’s rating, and its fitness to be maintained without dropping the load, stand central to the Uptime Institute tier classification.
