The Breaker Never Moved [/ðə ˈbreɪkər ˈnɛvər ˈmuvd/] n - The symptom. A rack PDU began reporting breaker trips. The load on the circuit lay well below the breaker rating, and no one had seen an actual outage, yet the monitor logged trips every few hours. The facilities team wished to schedule a circuit shutdown to inspect the breaker.

The dead end. [/ðə ˈdɛd ˈɛnd/] n - Swapping the breaker would have been the clean, documented answer. It would also have demanded a load transfer, downtime, and a parts order, and it would not have explained why a lightly loaded breaker was “tripping.”

The actual cause. [/ðə ˈæktʃuəl ˈkɔːz/] n - The shunt trip control wire, which told the monitoring board whether the breaker had opened, had a loose crimp at the auxiliary contact. Heat cycles from normal load made the connection open and close intermittently. The breaker never truly moved; the monitoring board merely believed it had.

The fix - limited and clever. [/ðə ˈfɪks/] n - We re-terminated the control wire and tightened the auxiliary contact. The phantom trips ceased at once. The breaker itself was sound, and the load never had to move. The repair cost less than a coffee run.
